II.        History

A.  18 Sept ’47 – Truman signs National Security Act of 1947

1.   Army Air Corps became the Air Force

2.   Officers Billy Mitchell and Jimmy Doolittle convinced Truman the separate USAF was necessary

3.   Air Force created from a need for military air power, speed, range, and flexibility

B.  Berlin Airlift – 1st major triumph

1.   Broke Soviet blockade of Berlin in 1948

2.   Korea – first theater in which USAF flew jets (including F-86 Sabre)

3.   1960s – 1970s – time of great development in USAF

a.   60s: ICBMs (Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles)

b.   70s: new jets: A-10 Thunderbolt, F-15 Eagle, F-16 Falcon, E-3 Sentry

4.   Laos9 Nov 1967

a.   F-4 dropped ordinance which blew up right after release, killing the pilot and severely injuring the RIO (Radar Intercept Officer)

b.   RIO Capt. Lance Sijan, USAF (USAFA grad) taken prisoner

·    Tried to escape, but eventually killed; became 1st USAFA graduate to be awarded the Medal of Honor

A.  Mission (not italicized!) – To inspire and develop young outstanding young men and women to become Air Force Officers with knowledge, character, and discipline motivated to lead the world’s greatest aerospace force in service to the nation.

B.  First Graduating Class – 306 Cadets reported 11 July 1955

1.   Air Training Officers acted as their upperclass

2.   207 Cadets graduates and were commissioned in June 1959

C.  Before 1959, 1/3 of all USNA and USMA classes were commissioned into the Air Force

 

VI.      Major General Bolden, USNA ‘68

A.  Went USMC Pilot and flew over 100 combat missions in Vietnam in the A-6A Intruder

B.  June ’79 – graduates from test pilot school

C.  1980 – selected as astronaut by NASA

D.  Did 4 Shuttle Missions; the final one in 1994 on the first ever joint US / Russian space mission (logs 680 hours in space)

E.  Deputy Commandant, USNA in 1994

F.  Currently is Commanding General of 3rd Marine Air Wing
